Police: Obtain permit for lion dance performance
KOTA KINABALU:  City Police Chief ACP Habibi Majinji reminded those involved in providing lion dance performances throughout the Chinese New Year celebration to have a permit or action will be taken against them.

Speaking to reporters at the IPD KK “Ops Selamat 14” launch, Saturday, he said the lion dance performance is not against the law but their “extra” activity of receiving donations from the public without a permit is wrong.

“The lion dance organisers should get this permit from the police first because their performance will involve collection of donations. If the permit is not acquired, it is an offence under the Public Collection Ordinance Sabah,” he said.

On Ops Selamat 14, Habibi said police would focus on four accident hotspots during the operation in conjunction with the Chinese New Year.

He said the “hotspots” which recorded high rates of accidents in the past are Jalan Lintas, Jalan Tuaran Bypass, Jalan Kepayan and Jalan Tun Fuad.

“Throughout the operation, traffic policemen would be present at these areas, conducting patrols and enforcement action against offences contributing to road accidents,” he said.

On a different note, he said police arrested 59 individuals, 29 of them foreigners, under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 in operations carried out around Telipok and Sembulan on Jan 26.

“Sixteen were in possession of drugs while 43 were found positive for drugs after urine tests,” he said.

He added those arrested were between 17 and 55 years old and police seized a total of 21.64gm of drugs worth approximately RM3,250. - Jeremy S Zabala
