KOTA KINABALU:

Sabah State Gymnastics Association (SSGA) will be sending eight rhythmic gymnasts to compete in the 5th Takasaki Silk Cup competition at Takasaki Arena, Japan on February 15-16.

The contingent led by Japanese coach Misaki Sako will leave on Thursday (February 14).

SSGA president Dr Judy Mahibol said on Monday that among the eight athletes, Zovi Tie Yu Pei is the only one competing in the senior category, whereas Nur Batrisyia Rafael, Leann Deborah Lokupi, Ningsari Atiqah Ali, Sophia Pancer, Dahlia Hadzrina Binti Hadzlan, Iona Scherise Gonsilou and Lee Ting Ling will be taking part in the junior category.

“The trip was initiated by Misaki, who has been working with us at Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex since August 2017 through Japanese International Cooperation Agency (Jica) as volunteer worker.

“She has shown good sets of discipline, passion and determination in her coaching. Despite being a voluntary coach, she has worked hard on a handful of potential gymnasts to improve their skills and performance.

“And through her contacts, our girls will also be given one day training session at Tokyo Women’s College of physical education during their stay there.

“Misaki is hoping the training sessions will expose our gymnasts on how the Japanese gymnasts conduct their training,” she added.

Judy disclosed that the expenditure for the trip amounted to RM40,000 and she praised parents of the gymnasts who have been very supportive by covering bulk of the  cost, while the rest are covered by individual sponsors, SSGA,  and also through MSN grant.

She also expressed her gratitude to MSN and Sabah Sports Board for their support. - GL Oh
