Suspect behind Aussie slashing arrested
TUARAN: The suspect who severely slashed an Australian near Kg Kiwoi, in Tamparuli on Jan. 24, was arrested in Kg Saga in Likas, Kota Kinabalu, Thursday.   

 District Police Chief DSP Dzulbaharin Ismail said the Filipino identified as Roy Samad Totong, 36, was detained at 1pm after he tried to escape by going into an unnumbered house in the village. 

 “The suspect tried to escape but police gave chase and managed to detain the suspect who tried to hide in an unnumbered house. He was aggressive and did not want to cooperate, he struggled to escape as the police personnel apprehended him,” he said. 

He said the suspect was referred to the Inanam police station before being handed over to the Tuaran District Police Headquarters.

 “The suspect was confirmed not having a travel pass or identification document and admitted that the weapon used to hack the victim was his.

  “He also confessed that he attacked the victim due to misunderstanding,” he said. The suspect is currently detained under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

The arrest was made based on surveillance by Inanam crime beat policemen. He went into hiding following the Jan 24 attack.  

 The victim Daniel Broadhurst, who is a diving instructor and married to a Sabahan, sustained serious injuries after the suspect attacked him with a machete at about 2.30pm.

 Broadhurst was discovered bloodied and lying on the ground near a forest by villagers, who rushed to his aide and alerted the authorities. He has since made steady recovery following surgery and treatment at QE1. - R GONZALES
