Car ploughs into students, killing one, injuring two

KOTA BELUD: A student was killed and two others critically injured after a Nissan Sentra believed driven by an intoxicated man ploughed into them at Jalan Tempasuk 2, here, Monday. 

Hospital paramedics pronounced Max Christty, 10, from SK Tempasuk 2, dead at the scene, while Michelle Marianne David, 14, from SMK Pekan 1, and Maxryona Masdi, 7, from SK Tempasuk 2, sustained severe head injuries.

Kota Belud Police Chief Supt Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said initial findings showed that the 54-year-old driver who worked as a farmer was heading home to Kg Tempasuk 2 from Pekan Kota Belud when the 6.45am tragedy happened. 

The trio were waiting at the roadside for transportation to school when the car rammed into them before smashing into the side of a concrete building nearby. 

The driver has been detained to facilitate investigations after receiving outpatient treatment for slight injuries to his forehead. 

Kota Belud Fire and Rescue Station Chief Rozlan Osman said 10 firefighters rushed to the scene following a 6.53am distress call. 

An Emergency Medical Response Services unit was also despatched to the scene.

In LABUAN, a  20-year-old motorcyclist died on the spot after crashing into a roadsign along Jalan Bunga Matahari early Sunday.

 Labuan police chief Supt Muhamad Farid Ahmad said Bobleeroy Salleh was heading towards Jalan Tun Mustapha after leaving an entertainment centre nearby when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed during the 4.45am incident.

 It is believed that the victim was riding under the influence of alcohol and checks revealed the victim did not carry any valid driving licence.

He added that the victim, from Tenom, suffered serious head and body injuries due to the impact.

The case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
