Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) has condemned the unilateral decision of the United States and its allies to declare war on Iraq, describing it as political bigotry of the highest order.
PBS Deputy President Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili told Parliament that the US had violated the charter and security provisions of the United Nations by proceeding to conduct war on Iraq without adhering to the majority view of members of the Security Council Supporting a motion tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad to condemn the on-going war in Iraq by the US and its allies, Maximus said the US, by its unilateral decision, had rendered the world security body powerless and void of value.
The action by the US and its irresponsible allies is most cruel, inhumane and disrespectful. They are more concerned with political power rather than the value of human lives, he charged.
The Bandau MP said there were no winners in the conduct of wars, stressing, there are only sufferings, pain and destruction.
Maximus said as one watched the progress of the war in the media, the whole affair is nothing more than a parade and testing of modern war armoury in a killing field of innocent people.
The only groups that hope to benefit from the war are weapons industrialists in the US, England and Spain whose business is to manufacture modern weapons and armoury and send them as items of war to test on innocent human lives, he claimed.
Ongkili also fully supported the comments by the Prime Minister that the US-Iraq war was not a religious conflict between Christians and Muslims.
World church leaders such as the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury as well as other Christian churches globally have condemned the war.
I am a Christian and I am totally against the war. I believe that God teaches us to love peace and humanity.
To the United States and its allies, stop it! You are killing innocent people, including your own children.
Maximus urged all Malaysians to rally behind the Government in taking tough measures to cushion the effects of the war on the national economy.
