Kota Kinabalu: More than 1,500 kilogrammes of fish of various species caught using explosives were recovered by Fisheries Department personnel from two lorries, near the Filipino market, here early Thursday.No arrest was made as the drivers had disappeared by the time a police party arrived.
According to Fisheries Department Enforcement Chief for Kota Kinabalu district, Joshua Gantai, his officers went to inspect the two lorries after being notified by the police at 9.50am.
“Upon checking, it was confirmed that explosives had been used to catch the fish,” he said.
The fish were kept in four separate containers, while the rest on the carrier of the lorries.
It was noted that both lorries belong to individuals, with one address in Kota Belud and the other in Kota Marudu.
City Police Chief, ACP Hamdan Haji Mohhamad, said the two lorries were seized to help with investigations.
Under the new Fisheries law passed recently by the State Assembly, anyone caught catching fish using explosives faces a mandatory jail term.
