Tawau: The tremor that was felt in Tawau early Monday originated from the Celebes (Sulawesi) Sea, about 300km away from the district. The minor quake read at 5.0 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was pinpointed to have been at latitude 3.1 degrees North and longitude 120 degrees East, which is between the east coast of Borneo and Sulawesi.
A spokesman for the Meteorological Services Depart-ment’s Seismology Division, Zaridah Mohd Jalal, said this data was obtained from a source in the European seismology network.
There are three seismology stations in Malaysia, namely at Tawau, Lawa Mandau, near Ranau, and Keluang in Johor.
To pinpoint the epicentre of an earthquake, all three stations need to get a wave reading on the tremor, and at least one of the stations needs to get a data on the tremor’s “S” (secondary) wave, she said.
No “S” wave was detected by the department, she said.
