Kuala Lumpur: Kuala Lumpur police have received tremendous response from the public for the newly-introduced short messaging service (SMS) crime-reporting method.
The method allows city residents to report crimes in Kuala Lumpur by simply sending an SMS to the police.
City Police Chief, Datuk Dell Akbar Khan, said a total of 6,946 SMS were received between Nov 13 to Dec 15. The input received from the public had helped police handle various petty crimes committed within the city centre.
He said through this method, police had received 1,962 complaints on traffic problems, 790 tips on drug cases, 865 general enquiries, 394 balik kampung SMS, 376 trial SMS and 745 other types of information.
Dell said this when attending a Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters here Friday.
He said police were working hard to improve the response rate to every SMS posted to them.
Dell added that all patrol cars would display the hotline number: 03-20520199 and SMS number: 39988 to enable more residents to send information. So far, all calls and SMS are genuine. We hope the public does not abuse this service, he said.
Meanwhile, Dell said he would chair a special meeting on Monday at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters with North-South Expressway (PLUS) officers, State Education Officers and school bus operators. - Bernama
