Tawau: Outgoing Tawau Municipal Council President Datuk Harith Mohd Yahya said an integrated operation will soon be carried out against illegal hawking by foreigners at the barter trade centre at the Tawau port.He said the Immigration Department would lead the operation to overcome the problem that had become increasingly rampant in the area.

The pathetic situation, in which rubbish were indiscriminately dumped into the sea by the hawkers, despite the presence of rubbish bins placed by the Council, had been a cause for concern.

One possible solution would be to set up a canteen in the port area, after getting rid of the illegal hawkers, he said.

Harith assured that TMC had been strict in the issuance of hawkers' licences.

While the foreigners tried to earn a decent living in the district, they were not following specific requirements set by the Council, he said.

He also regretted that foreigners hired as public transport drivers had been causing a lot of traffic problems in the district, like stopping their buses to pick up passengers indiscriminately, including at roundabouts.
