Sandakan: A total of 405 business premises were checked by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) in a two-day operation here, beginning from Monday.Sandakan IRD Director, Mohd Zaki Ariffin, said the Ops Mematuhi, conducted by a team led by Kota Kinabalu IRB Deputy Director A. Karim, targeted registered companies (Sendirian Berhad) that had failed to submit their annual income tax return forms for taxation purposes.
He said the defaulters are liable to a compound fine or a taxable sum to be assessed by IRB.
Zaki also advised taxpayers in the district to remit their payments through the Public Bank or Bumiputera Commerce Bank to avoid being cheated.
He gave the advice in the wake of complaints about bogus IRB officials collecting payments from taxpayers.
"We (IRB) have never authorised any individual to collect payments on our behalf," he stressed, and urged those approached by such people to report to the police.
Meanwhile, former Petaling Jaya IRB Director Abdul Wahab Abd Ghani took over duties from Mohd Zaki in a brief handing-over ceremony held at the IRB office at the Federal House, Mile 7, Jalan Utara, Tuesday afternoon.
Mohd Zaki, who had served here for three years, will be appointed as Kuching IRD Deputy Director.
