Kota Kinabalu: Sabah registered a slight improvement of 1.95 per cent in the Lower Secondary Assessment or Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) results this year.Announcing the results Wednesday, Sabah Education Director Datuk Hj Amin Arif, said 31,996 government school students sat for the PMR this year compared with 33,259 last year.

"Overall, we are very proud of the results achieved by school candidates in the State. Of the figure, 14,246 students or 53.95 per cent succeeded in achieving the minimum level required for all subjects taken.

"This means they obtained at least Grade D in all the subjects concerned. The level of performance has gone up compared with the overall achievement of 52 per cent in 2003," he said.

Amin was pleased to note that the number of students with 9As increased from 17 last year to 19 this year. However, there was a drop in the number of 8A achievers from 186 in 2003 to 143 this year. Similarly, the number of 7A scorers declined from 226 last year to 180.

The 143 students with 8A distinctions are from 43 schools throughout the State. Topping the list of 8A achievers is SM Sains Lahad Datu (23), followed by SM Sains Sabah Kota Kinabalu (18) and SM Sung Siew Sandakan (16).

SM Tinggi Kota Kinabalu and SM Lok Yuk Likas, each had nine 8A scorers, SMK Tawau (7), and SM All Saints (6).

The Director said statistics show that the state average of achievement in seven subjects exceeded the national average. They were for Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah, Geografi, Kemahiran Hidup 1, Kemahiran Hidup 3, Bahasa Cina and Sains.

However, Sabah's average of achievement was below the national average for five subjects, namely Bahasa Inggeris, Pendidikan Islam, Kemahiran Hidup 2, Bahasa Arab, and Matematik.

Meanwhile, Amin said candidates who are dissatisfied with their results may apply for a re-check.

Application forms for the purpose are available from the principal of the respective schools.

The closing date for submission of applications is Jan. 29 next year.
