Kota Kinabalu: The Lau Gek Poh Foundation on Sunday pledged a donation of RM1 million for the victims of the Dec 26 tsunami disaster in the northwestern states of Peninsular Malaysia.
Foundation Chairman Tan Sri Lau Gek Poh, who is also Chairman of Gek Poh (Holdings) Sdn Bhd, presented a mock cheque for the amount to New Straits Times Group Editor Md Salehuddin Othman for the NST-BH-TV3-8TV Malaysian Tsunami Disaster Fund, here.
Lau said he was saddened by the loss of lives and destruction of property and hoped the donation would provide some assistance in "rebuilding the lives of those who have lost so much in the tragedy".
David Park, one of the foundation trustees, said at the presentation that the RM1 million was the single largest donation so far in the organisation's history.
Lau had established the foundation in 1991 to receive and administer funds for education, scientific and charitable purposes.
