Kota Kinabalu: Government agencies and corporations must plan and implement objectives with efficiency, transparency and commitment in order to realise the Halatuju objectives.
"These agencies and corporations must come up with their own plans and proposals. They must be sure of what they want to do and ensure that it complies with the aims and objectives of the Halatuju," said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.
"Whatever proposal is forwarded to me, I will listen. If their proposals are good and workable, they can go ahead," he said after receiving Sedco Group's 2004 performance interim report from its Chairman Datuk Mohd Lan Allani at Wisma Innoprise in Likas, Wednesday.
Mohd Lan Allani also presented RM50,000 contribution from the Group to the Chief Minister for the National Tsunami Relief Fund.
Musa noted that while the Sedco Group performance last year was creditable, the organisation could achieve even better results by anticipating future challenges and issues correctly and positioning itself to exploit new opportunities.
He also agreed with Sedco's plan to broaden its business portfolio by exploring new areas of investment and business.
Meanwhile, Mohd Lan told Musa that the Sedco Group chalked a turnover of RM406.8 million last year with a pre-tax profit of RM26.4 million and that efforts to rehabilitate several ailing Sedco subsidiaries had shown positive results.
"Seven of our subsidiaries were in the red for a number of years. Four of them we have turned round and are now in the black. The other three have succeeded in reducing their losses and are expected to start making profits by next year or in the very near future," he said.
Mohd Lan was glad to note that Perkasa Hotels were beginning to make profit after always being in the red since its inception.
He believed these successes had been made possible by the clarity of direction set by the CM through the Halatuju for the economic development agenda of the State.
"Furthermore, it is also very clear that the placement of the right people in the right places by the leadership has enabled us to achieve a lot in terms of achieving greater efficiency and a renewed sense of purpose. There is also more transparency and commitment to the economic agenda now".
Mohd Lan told Musa that all chairmen of Sedco subsidiaries had been told to be more involved and strengthen rapport with their CEO's and senior management.
"As we move into the Ninth Malaysia Plan, Sedco would endeavour to justify its position as an important delivery mechanism of the State Government's economic agenda in conformity with the Halatuju," he said.
He said Sedco was also looking at efficiency through sectoral mergers of its subsidiaries, such as SUDC and Perkasa Realty for example.
"That will give us greater administrative and management efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
It will also enable us to re-deploy our manpower to our best advantage. Once this is done, our aim is to become leaders in the respective areas of business and set industry benchmarks in these sectors," he said.
Also present were Sedco Deputy Chairman, Liew Teck Chan and Group General Manager, Maisuri Besri.
