Kota Kinabalu: Former Senior Sessions Court Judge Datuk Nurchaya Arshad has been transferred to the Tawau High Court following her promotion as a Judicial Commissioner.A local from Keningau, the 49-year-old judge is a Licentiate in Law (Hons) of the University College of Buckingham, England and a barrister-at-law (Lincoln's Inn) London, England.
She first served as a Magistrate here on Oct 1, 1981 and was transferred to Tawau a year later. She was back in Kota Kinabalu after being appointed High Court Deputy Registrar on Feb. 16, 1992.
On June 16, 1995, she was transferred to the State Attorney-General's Chambers as a Senior Federal Counsel and subsequently appointed Sessions Court Judge at Shah Alam.
She returned to Sabah after being promoted as Senior Sessions Court Judge on Nov 1, 1997. She received her letter of appointment as Judicial Commissioner on Aug 29.
Nurchaya, who was awarded the State's second highest award, the Panglima Gemilang Darjah Kinabalu (PGDK) which carries the title 'Datuk' by the Sabah Head of State on Sept 16, 2002, was also made a Justice of the Peace (JP) on Sept 16, 1995.
She also received the Certificate of Excellent Service in 1991 from the Prime Minister's Department (Legal Affairs) and the Excellent Service Award by the Federal Court in 2003.
She has three adopted children, Khatijah, 19. Shafique Miraj, 7, and Farhahn Miraj, 3.
