Kuala Lumpur: The checking of headphones by the police for obscene or pornographic images is a violation of an individual's privacy, the Bar Council said.
The police should only check people suspected of downloading smut to their handphones, said Bar Council President Yeoh Yong Poh.
He was responding to the recent directive to the police by Internal Security Deputy Minister Datuk Noh Omar to check all handphones for obscene material.
Suhakam also protested against the directive, saying that in this era of technology, such checks are unlawful and give rise to the possibility of innocents being wrongly charged.
Suhakam Commissioner Datuk Hamdan Adnan said if a person receives unsolicited obscene material, it would be an injustice to charge the recipient with having smut on his handphone.
