Tawau: Local activist Jimmy Wong described the Sabindo "open space issue" as a serious problem that should involve the intervention of higher authorities, other than the Tawau Municipal Council. He said this to reporters after noticing that the developers were still carrying on works to set up commercial buildings in the area on Saturday, despite a State Cabinet directive to stop the project.

In this respect, the Government should form a special committee involving the Chief Minister and his three Deputy Chief Ministers to resolve the problem and, at the same time, redeem public confidence, he said.

Wong said "irregular" projects should be thoroughly investigated to clear the air.

He also pointed out that other than the five areas in Sabindo, it should also be noted that Sabindo Square covering four acres had been gazetted for a bus terminal.

Furthermore, he questioned why the open space at Taman Semarak had been developed for the construction of buildings, based on an advertisement offering lots for sale.

He claimed all these projects were dubious in nature and definitely would not benefit the people in general.

Recently, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Mohd Noor confirmed that "a stop work" order had been directed to the Tawau Municipal Council, following a Cabinet decision.

He said the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) is free to conduct investigations to detect any irregularity in the approval of the local authority for the development of the Sabindo open space.
