Kota Kinabalu: Sabah until now is bird-flu free and the Government is taking proactive measures to prevent an outbreak of the deadly disease in the State, State Secretary Datuk K Y Mustapa said Wednesday."We don't want the people to be anxious or fearful of their safety as vigilance at entry points into the state have been heightened," he told a press conference at Wisma Innoprise, here. Mustapa said as of August this year, the Royal Customs and Excise Department had seized three fighting cocks and two fowls in Tawau which had been brought in from Indonesia.
He said the State Government, with the co-operation of the Health Ministry, would constantly monitor the situation and act quickly in preventing any outbreak.
Until Wednesday, four people were reported to have died of the disease in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, a city with a population of over 12 million.
Health authorities there are intensifying efforts to stem an outbreak of bird flu disease, which has been reported to have reached epidemic proportions.-Bernama
