MUSA, who is also Finance Minister, announced that a total of RM391m will be spent to improve the railway system in Sabah, which will include the 134km railway from Tanjung Aru to Tenom, under the second phase of the modernisation process of the State railway.

The contract for the project had been awarded to Hikmat Bumiputra Sdn Bhd and Suria Capital Holdings Bhd. However, Musa did not disclose when the project would be implemented.

The Council was briefed by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) and the State Railway Department under the Transport Ministry that nine new stations would be built and four upgraded while some new bridges would be built and some upgraded.

The 22 railway crossings would also be upgraded while a better communication and signalling system would be installed.

The first phase of the modernisation process involved an urgent rehabilitation plan that was completed in November 2003 costing around RM10.7 million.

The third phase, which is for the long-term planning, was currently being studied for implementation either under the Ninth Malaysia Plan or Tenth Malaysia Plan
