Published on: Thursday, December 01, 2005

Sandakan: The Wildlife Department here recorded its biggest case involving protected species when 100 boxes containing frozen pangolin meat and another 35 boxes of the meat with scales were seized.

Its head here, Abdul Karim Dakog, said the General Operation Force (PGA) inspected the container truck which was heading here from the State Capital, at a checkpoint of Mile 32 along Jalan Sandakan-Kota Kinabalu at 3.50am on Nov. 30 and found the truck was carrying the illegal consignment.

He said the PGA lodged a report and the case was referred to the department to be prosecuted under an enactment for possessing no permit to ferry the goods.

Based on the department's examination of the boxes, Karim believed the meat was meant for the overseas market. The truck driver and his attendant aged 37 and 48 were remanded.

In a separate case, police detained a container lorry carrying more than 1,000 boxes of liquor believed to be without approval from Customs during a roadblock at 11am the same day.

The 40-year-old local driver was also arrested and detained during the police inspection. It is believed that the lorry was heading to Tawau from the State capital.
