Trio who beat up student held

Published on: Thursday, September 28, 2006

Kota Kinabalu: Three secondary students were detained in connection with a video clip of a group of boys beating a younger boy that was posted on the Internet.

City Police Chief ACP Shah Gzali Khan Shahadad said police detained the 16-year-olds, two of them twins, on Monday and Tuesday at their homes in Luyang and are looking for two others.

"The father of the boy who was beaten up lodged a report after learning about the clip through a friend who had seen it on the Internet.

"The 13-year-old boy dared not tell his father of the incident that took place on Aug. 12 at one of the shop staircases at Damai, Luyang, for fear of being scolded," he said.

The two-minute clip starts with a group of boys cornering the younger boy at a staircase before one them throws a plastic packet drink at the latter.

He then assaults the boy before calling on the friends to beat him up. One of the assailants put his arms around the boy's shoulder and smiles at the camera phone, deliberately showing his face.

Shah Gzali said the group assaulted the boy because of a misunderstanding over a computer game. Investigations have been framed under Section 147 for rioting.
