Efforts to bring Umno to S'wak a joke: Johari

Published on: Sunday, November 19, 2006

Kuching: Deputy Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) President Datuk Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg regards the efforts by a group calling itself the Sarawak Umno pro tem committee (JPUNS) to bring Umno to Sarawak as a joke.

Abang Johari, who is State Housing Minister, said the issue which the group was attempting to raise was "stale" because it was clear that Umno would not spread its wings to Sarawak.

"Everybody can talk but don't believe such news," he told reporters when asked to comment on a group of 14 Malays trying to get Umno into Sarawak.

Asked on claims that about 100,000 Sarawakians had registered to become Umno members, Abang Johari said: "They can give any number they want but all this has no credibility, it's a joke."

He said Umno Secretary-General Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad had clarified that the party headquarters had not authorised anyone to form Umno in Sarawak.

On Nov 10, JPUNS Chairman Affendi Jeman claimed that the committee had veterans and Malay professionals as members and 100,000 supporters in Sarawak.- Bernama
