Kota Belud: Flash floods hit several kampungs in low-lying areas after the Tempasuk river overflowed its banks, following 24-hour non-stop rain since Sunday. The hardest hit was Kampung Dongoi, in the Usukan area, where 29 families have been evacuated to higher ground.
District Officer and District National Disaster Relief Committee Chairman, Edris Yahya, said immediate assistance such as food had been despatched to the victims.
Usukan Assemblyman Datuk Japlin Akim, together with several organisations, helped in the evacuation exercise.
The other affected kampungs are Lingkodon and Lebak Mayoh.
It was noted that the rain stopped at 6.30am Monday, but the Kota Belud town area was already flooded then, especially the town padang which is under one metre of water.
Business activities came to a standstill as a number of vital roads were rendered impassable to traffic.
Meanwhile, police said no casualties were reported in the latest floods.
Edris advised the public, especially young children, to refrain from playing with the floodwaters.
