Terengganu: An SMS message kindled suspicion in a man that his wife was having an affair, prompting him to splash acid on her and took his own life by drinking it.
Zulkifli Salim, 49, is said to have read the message from his wife's handphone at the house of the woman's parents at Kampung Raja in Besut.
State CID deputy chief Supt Khairi Ahrasa said after reading the message, Zulfifli accused his wife, Ramlah Mohamad, 26, of having an affair with another man and a quarrel ensued.
"In the heat of anger during the quarrel, he splashed acid on his wife's back and he drank it. His wife's cries of pain drew neighbours' attention," he told reporters.
He said police rushed to the scene after the victim's neighbours lodged a report at the Kampung Raja police station.
Khairi said police found Zulkifli in critical condition and rushed him to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital here while his wife was sent to the Besut Hospital.
He said Zulkifli died at the hospital while his wife, who suffered burns on her back, head and cheek, was transferred to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Baharu for further treatment.
It is learnt that the couple used to live in Penang but Ramlah returned to her parents' house in Kampung Raja last month and worked at a foodstall in the village.
Zulkifli, who works in Penang, returned to his wife's house last Thursday.
The couple's three children and Ramlah's parents were in the house at the time of the incident.
