Tawau: Assistant Rural Development Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan said disabled people (OKU) have the potential to be employed if given proper guidance and training.
In this respect, the Manpower Department should be more proactive in promoting such an awareness to the target group, employers and the community at large so that their involvement in the job market could be realised, he said.
For this purpose, the Manpower Department should not only conduct an expo on job prospects, but also serves as a venue for the OKU in acquiring job placements, he added.
This could also help reduce the dependency on foreign workers and the problem of unemployment, thereby allowing the department to resolve the imbalance in the job sector, he said.
Tawfig said this while opening the Manpower Department Work Expo at the community centre here, on Thursday.
At the same time, he also launched the district level OKU bulletin "Bersamamu", which he said served as a medium for further information on disabled people in the district.
According to him, statistics in 2006 showed that 110 OKU registered themselves for job placements, but only 53 were accepted for employment.
It was noted that, this year, between Jan and March, 82 OKU had registered for placement but only 18 were accepted.
Also present was Sabah Manpower Director Siti Aishah Haji Mohd Asri.
