Dead baby in shoe-box outside mosque gate

Published on: Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Kota Kinabalu: The remains of a baby, believed prematurely born, were found in front of the State mosque in Sembulan, here, Monday.

It was learnt that construction workers and mosque staff found the decomposed body, wrapped in a piece of cloth, inside a shoe-box just outside the compound gates.

City Police Chief, ACP Ahmad Sofi Zakaria said police believe the remains were left there for about a week.

"However, we are still waiting for the postmortem result. In the meantime I call on those with information pertaining to the matter to contact police immediately," he said.

Suratman Mohd Saad, 25, a mosque staff, said he first noticed the shoe-box placed on top of a concrete section of the gate about two weeks ago but that it never crossed his mind to check what was inside.

"Today about 9am, a friend told me there was something in the box, which was already on the walkway, probably blown off by the wind. So I decided to have a look.

"I was shocked to see the skeletal remains of what looked like a baby," he added. It was also learnt there was a booklet containing the Surah Yassin, which is a prayer for the deceased, placed next to the palm-sized baby.

Also present at the scene was Tanjung Aru Officer in-Charge of Station, Sergeant Major Samad Sumadi.
