Be wary of conmen, warns Customs

Department is banking on increasing its revenue by improving its services to customers.Its Director Datuk Md Yusop Mansor said the term customer on its clients charter previously has now been changed to "guests".

The guests, he said, would be given the best services such as the Green Lane where goods brought into the State that have been cleared by other agencies would be cleared within 15 minutes by the department.

"We also emphasise on electronic methods where licence could be applied via on-line," he told reporters in a press conference at his office, Tuesday.

He said the department would be signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the shipping agencies' association for exchange of information soon.

In order to improve its services, he said there must be constant dialogue between the department and the association.

On other developments, Md Yusop advised the people to be wary of conmen out to fleece innocent victims of their money.

He said there have been cases of people pretending to be Customs officers calling from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), saying the victim's consignment such as laptop computers is being held by the department.

"These people would ask the victim to electronically transfer money to them so as to enable the consignment to be released," he said.

He said there were also cases of bogus customs officers offering seized goods such as television sets to the public at very low prices.

Md Yusop clarified that the department has so far not seized any television set or to conducted any auction.

He said that there is no such thing as shortcut to the department's tender process.

Meanwhile, he said the department would be increasing the number of its personnel by 122 at the upgraded Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).
