Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi reminded all Barisan Nasional (BN) elected representatives to refrain from being arrogant and corrupt in discharging their duties as Members of Parliament and state assemblymen."It is hoped that the BN elected representatives will not allow themselves to be labelled as arrogant and corrupt," he told reporters after a closed-door meeting with BN elected representatives and senators at the Putra World Trade Centre, here, Monday.

"They must rise to become elected representatives of integrity, their character unblemished by activities undesired by the people. They must serve their constituents with integrity," said Abdullah, who is also BN Chairman.

These leaders must understand how important it was for them to work hard and with dedication as the elected representatives and refrain from succumbing to arrogance and corruption, he said.

He also said that the BN elected representatives must constantly monitor Federal Government projects and report stalled or abandoned projects to the respective Ministers for immediate rectification.

"Generally, the people and Umno members are waiting for reform and welcome the Prime Minister's naming of Najib as his successor...the question now is when and how. The political tsunami has passed, now there is a strong tsunami within Umno," he told reporters after the meeting.

Radzi said the mood among the majority of Umno leaders and the grassroots was for the succession plan to be executed quickly in an orderly manner.

He also asked Perak Umno Liaison Committee Chairman Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali to give way to a "more dynamic" leader to rehabilitate Perak Umno.

Abdullah said the BN assemblymen in the opposition-held states have to work with the BN MPs in their areas to give excellent service to their constituents.

"They should not assume that they do not have a role to play just because the State Government is not administered by the BN. They have roles to play in the State Legislative Assembly as well as in their constituencies," he said, adding that he emphasised this during his briefing to the elected representatives.

"They must understand what is being implemented by the governments in the (opposition-held) states. They must know the policies implemented by those governments and they must be able to debate on the issues," he said.

The Prime Minister said all BN elected representatives should understand the intention and purpose of bills tabled for approval in the Dewan Rakyat.

"In this matter, the Ministers will give their briefing so that the intention and purpose are understood by the members of the house. The important thing is for all the MPs to ensure that debates in parliament are of quality and free from racial sensitivities," he said.

Asked about the response of the elected representatives to his briefing, Abdullah said: "It was well-received by all present. The response was good.

I had a standing ovation from all of them."- Bernama
