Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government headed by the Barisan Nasional (BN) will continue to exploit Sabah unless its leaders and the people dare to do something about it, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Vice President Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan."Even after the recent elections, Kuala Lumpur is still continuing its condescending attitude towards Sabah.

"(Minister in the Prime Minister's Department) Datuk Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz still insists on giving IMM13 passes to a large group of illegal immigrants, to feed, house and educate them (illegal immigrants).

"He doesn't even think it fit to respond to BN leaders in Sabah, who strongly voiced their disagreements to the proposal," he said in a statement, Saturday.

Jeffrey claimed that since 1963 the Federal Government has looked down on Sabah, depriving the State of having the opportunity to play a more important role in the Federal Government.

He also claimed that the current situation of the State could be attributed to the poor quality of its leaders, saying this has caused the civil service to deteriorate.

"We can clearly see this in the way they glaringly fail to enforce their powers even when there is a flagrant violation of the law such as land matters," he said, adding the interaction between the leaders with the civil servants has been one way.

"This is the reason why there has not been much feedback for political leaders for effective decision-making. A good example of the low-level information and knowledge among political leaders is their ignorance of basic knowledge such as the GDP.

"How many of our leaders actually raise poverty issues by referring to the GDP? How many actually know the impact on local situation as a result of changes in the international economies?" he asked.

Jeffrey claimed that the current Federal Government was in fragile condition and as such, Sabah leaders and Sabahans have the historic opportunity for a change, saying a new government under the People's Alliance (Pakatan Rakyat) will have a different attitude towards the State.
