Kota Kinabalu: Scrap metal thieves have targeted another high-tension cable pylon, this time a tower at Kg Pulutan in Menggatal, near here.Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) staff found about 32 supporting steel bars missing from the pylon in one of their inspections recently.

Meanwhile, SESB has instituted checks on all the pylons along its power transmission route in Sepanggar Bay to ensure everything is in order, said Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Chairman, Tan Sri Leo Moggie.

He said the SESB at its board meeting Friday had reviewed the transmission tower collapse on April 21 and 30 and also that of the emergency tower that resulted in one TNB personnel being killed and four others injured.

Moggie said the Board had decided to approve the implementation of a fast track re-erection of these towers.

It means some of the towers earmarked for another project would be diverted to Sepanggar Bay in order to speed up installation so that power supply can be restored.

"Unfortunately, in each of the cases the tower collapsed due to the cross bars being dismantled. The management had also instituted investigations on all the towers along this particular route in Sepanggar Bay and hopefully there will be no more such cases," he said.

Moggie said TNB and SESB expressed gratitude to the police for helping to check the power line system. He said they appealed to the public for information, if not to SESB to the police if they happen to see suspicious characters disturbing the towers.

"We know the State Government is very concerned based on the Chief Minister's statement and we understand his feelings," he said.
