Muhy slams Anwar for seeking sympathy

Published on: Thursday, August 21, 2008

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is disappointed with Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's penchant for seeking sympathy from foreign countries to the extent of them viewing Malaysia negatively now.

He said foreign interference in Malaysia's sovereignty was dangerous to the people and nation.

Muhyiddin, who is also International Trade and Industry Minister, said he regarded Anwar's action in seeking foreign support as compromising the country's honour and dignity.

"The Barisan Nasional (BN) does not allow foreign powers to interfere in the country's internal affairs," he said when meeting BN's Permatang Pauh by-election machinery at the BN operations room in Jalan Baru, near here, Wednesday.

Muhyiddin said the objectives of the New Economic Policy championed by the BN government would be difficult to achieve if the people chose the opposition to govern the country.

He said the Penang government leadership had never declared to want to look into the plight of the Malays, while a Menteri Besar from PKR suggested that 10 per cent of places at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) be allocated to non-Bumiputera and foreign students.

Muhyiddin reminded voters in Permatang Pauh not to gamble their future by retaining an opposition candidate for the constituency.

"Permatang Pauh (on Aug 26) is a test in restoring public confidence in the BN government," he said. - Bernama
