Bamboo sax

Published on: Sunday, May 03, 2009

SABAH may have given jazz music a new twist with saxophones made out of home-grown top grade bamboo - proof that Sabah's musical craftsmanship is getting more creative and sophisticated.

Philipus Jaini's creative talent came to light at the Sabah Fest 2009 Cultural Extravaganza handicraft and cuisine exhibition at Sutera Magellan Grand Ballroom on Saturday. The Tambunan musician not only makes bamboo saxophones but has also performed at public concerts with the Universiti Malaysia Sabah Orchestra, in addition to other local bands.

He vouches that the sounds from his bamboo sax is just as good as the real thing. Philipus started crafting these in 1993 but really became serious after 2005.

So far, he has made 34 pieces, of which 24 are small and 11 big, at RM500 each for the small version and RM1,000 each for the big ones. It doesn't take him long to make one - just four days to a week. Asked who are the buyers, he said "friends, relatives, individuals and schools."

Philipus will be giving live demonstrations at the Sutera Magellan Grand Ballroom today (Sunday) from 9am onwards. See also our Page 7 Special Reports on the Sabah Fest.
