Total gas subsidy for 2009 at RM12.8b

Kuala Lumpur: The total gas subsidy for 2009 will be RM12.6 billion, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, said Thursday.The government has decided to retain the existing gas price of RM10.70/MMBtu (British thermal units), "so for the second six months (the subsidy) will be RM6.4 billion and when you annualise it, it will be RM12.8 billion."The next review on the gas price for the electricity sector will take place end of this year and if there is any change, it will take effect in January 2010, he told reporters after delivering a keynote address at a forum on the private pension industry and retirement funds here.

On other development, Nor Mohamed said the formation of Ekuiti Nasional Bhd (Ekuinas) was progressing well and it would be established by end of 2009.Recently, the government announced the establishment of Ekuinas, a private equity fund with a paid-up capital of RM500 million. - Bernama
