Ding Sing Chai (pic), the Secretary/Industrial Relations Advisor of the Sabah Employers' Consultative Association, claimed the attack occurred near his office in Sandakan on Sunday.
He had driven there with his wife who had gone somewhere else, leaving him to walk alone to his office.
"Suddenly I saw a man who was wearing a hooded T-shirt, making it difficult for me to see his face.
"I walked quickly to my bonnet when the man charged at me and hit my head with a stick. The second blow was on my eye, which caused me to fall, and even when I was on the ground, the man kept assaulting me," he said.
Ding said he shouted as loud as he could, alerting his wife and passers-by and prompting the assailant to flee.
"I believe this happened because some association members are unhappy at the way I handle the association matters," he said, declining to elaborate.
He said he lodged a report after seeking treatment at the hospital.
