Sandakan: A play exploring a host of issues put Kota Kinabalu's La Salle secondary school in top spot at this year's State level inter-school English drama competition on Saturday, here. The win earned La Salle the right to represent Sabah at the national level competition scheduled in Penang later this month.

The La Salle team had an extra reason to celebrate as its cast member Ralph Lauren Thaddeus was also named the Best Actor in the competition.

A total of six schools representing Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau, Penampang, Papar and Lahad Datu took part in the event at the Sekolah Agama Sandakan hall.

In second place was St Patrick secondary school of Tawau, while Papar's St Joseph secondary school took third spot.

The La Salle play titled "A Malaysian Breakfast" was written by the school's former student Hazli Zafar and its 15-member cast comprised students from Form One to Form Five. Two among the team comprised brothers, Raul James, a Form Five student, and Andreas James who is in Form One.

The 20-minute play set in coffee shop explored issues such as truancy, the impact of large scale developments such as mega malls on society, parent-children relationships and health issues including Malaysians' high consumption of sugar.

La Salle Principal Julia Willie Jock said the school's success was due to a team of committed teachers while the cast comprise dedicated students and a "solid" script.

"Drama has always been our forte and this partly because our former students have always lent a helping hand to their counterparts still in school. This is the La Salle spirit," she added.

Head of Language Department Veronica Somosundram said the idea for the play's story line emerged as she was discussing about the play with Hazli and a few students at a coffee shop in Tanjung Aru town, near the school.

"The success of our play this year is partly due to the story line, the quality of the language and the issues raised are very real, these are what teenagers experience," she said.

Apart from Ralph Lauren, Raul and Andreas, the others in the La Salle drama team were Woosnam Mojilip, Chin Li New, Nathaniel Takong, Raphael Sario, Jude Macson Bensing, Johnross Cooke, Adriance Anggang, Orlando Jimli, James Sharkey, Joshua Kamijan, Roussell Totu and Valentine Joibi.
