Labuan: The "big guns" of golfing in the area are coming for the Labuan Amateur Open Golf Championship which would be held this weekend from 23-25 October.
The event is the most prestigious golfing tournament of the Labuan Golf Club and as usual it has attracted many golfers from Borneo.
Among those expected are defending champion from SGCC, Nicklaus Fung, who is a product of SGA Junior Golf programme and is turning professional by the end of the year.
Also in the green will be 2006 champion Kelana Ibrahim and local favourite, Joannes Pius who is the club champion for three consecutive years. Several top notch golfers from Keningau, Kudat and Brunei will also be competition.
A statement from the club said that this year's championship had a new feature. It was recognised by SGA as one of the major golf tournaments in Sabah and winners would be awarded points to qualify for selection for SGA Cup and the Sukma Games.
The main sponsor for the tournament is Asian Supply Base Sdn Bhd (ASB), as its CEO, Dato Harris Hj Annuar Tan is a strong proponent of junior golf development activities in Labuan.
Hole-in-one prizes for two par threes is sponsored by Kurnia Insurans Bhd - a Toyota Vios 1.5 at Hole No. 4 and Rintis Malay Motor Sdn Bhd - RM50,000 cash at Hole No. 8.
Tournament Director, Ranjeet Singh who is also Golf Captain said that elaborate arrangements had been made by the committee to ensure an interesting and challenging tournament.
Club President and Tournament Chairman, Arthur Kong, said that the club operated under a deficit budget and hopes that through the championship the club would be able to raise donations through advertisements.
