Four State lawn bowlers for Borneo-Peninsula meet

Kota Kinabalu: Four young lawn bowlers from the State are to participate in the annual Borneo against Peninsula competition to be held in Kuching, Sarawak from October 22-24.

The team comprising of Muhammad Afig Tan, Nur Syafiqa Johana Mohd Affendy Tan, Muhammad Firdaus Sulaiman and Fatin Aqilah Amran will team up with four other bowlers from Sarawak in forming the Borneo team.

The competition this year will feature bowlers from both sides all below the age of eighteen and the Borneo team will be up against the Peninsula team which is represented by top juniors from the national back up squad.

Having lost in the same meet which was held in Labuan last year by 182 points to 90 points, the Borneo team is set to try and turn the table on their opposition this time around.

The meet will also be a great opportunity for the foursome from Sabah to strut their stuff against the country's best in their age group.

They will definitely try their very best in order to impress the selection committee and lay claim for a spot in the squad bound for the Sukma Games in Melaka next year.

According to coach Affendi Tan who is in charge of the Sukma team, the final athletes bound for the Melaka Games is still yet to be decided.

He said presently there are sixteen bowlers training under him daily at the Likas lawn bowl courts. They are split into two groups, one in the morning session and the other in the afternoon session according to their school schedules.

Meanwhile, he also told Express Sports that the four bowlers who were involved in the Labuan Mixed Fours International held late last month did credibly well.

He said he is very pleased with their effort considering that they were up against all the top bowlers in the region.

The Sabah contingent led by coach Affendi will leave for Kuching on Wednesday morning.
