Kota Kinabalu: The State Forestry Department will hold a two-day regional forum on "Enhancing Forest Ecosystems Connectivity & Corridors within the Heart of Borneo in Sabah" here from Oct 26.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman is scheduled to open the forum, aimed primarily at highlighting and discussing on the several themes.
These include the concept and requirement of forest connectivity and corridors in connection with the conservation of wildlife, flora and fauna; the status of the various initiatives on enhancing forest connectivity or corridors and; the way forward to advance their implementation.
A total of 16 speakers of different backgrounds will be presenting at the forum, according to a statement Thursday.
The State Government, represented by the said department, will also be entering into a five-year MoU with WWF-Malaysia to restore 967ha of degraded areas in North Ulu Segama for the enhancement of the habitat of the orang-utans. The funding amounting to RM4.25 million will be made available by the ITOCHU Corporation of Japan to support this noble activity.
In addition to that, the State Government represented by the department will also enter into a five-year MoU with PPB Oil Palms Berhad on riparian management, involving an area of 382.42ha of the Segama River riparian area and the development of successful riparian management, enrichment and rehabilitation methods which can be adapted for implementation throughout PPB's operations.
In conjunction with the forum, an exhibition which focuses on the forum theme will be held at the hotel foyer and graced by Musa himself.
In order to ensure that the message from the exhibition reaches out to the public, the department's Director will officiate the launching of an extended exhibition which will be held at the 1Borneo mall here from Oct 30 to Nov 1.
There would be some quizzes throughout the period of this exhibition and fabulous prizes for the winners.
