24 are appointed City Coordinators

Kota Kinabalu: City Hall has appointed 24 people comprising corporate and community leaders as its City Coordinators (CC) to boost further the effectiveness of its delivery system and services for the people.

Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim, who personally handed over the appointment letters to them in a ceremony held at the City Hall building here Thursday, said the CC was actually a renewed version of the area liaison representative (WPK) which he introduced in 2006 to achieve his halatuju as a Mayor.

He said the CC was formed according to designated areas and zones within the city jurisdiction with the aim, among others, to strengthen collaboration between City Hall and the public through a strong two-way communication, where the CC who serves on a voluntarily basis would assist it in monitoring/supervising the performance and quality of the basic services it provides for the people.

These services include grass-cutting, drainage-cleaning, rubbish collection, street cleaning and area beautification works.

This is besides encouraging public participation in maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of the city through the manage-your-own-environment concept, he said, adding the CC were appointed based on several factors.

He said these include their influence and relationship with the local community which can help to foster a good relationship and collaboration among the people towards achieving City Hall's halatuju.

Those appointed CCs have also shown an excellent example through their proactive involvement in maintaining the city's cleanliness and the environment as well as continuously cooperating and contributing to City Hall and the city, he added.

Saying the creation of the CC does not mean taking over the duties and responsibilities of elected representatives and committees like the Urban Development Committee, Village Development and Security Committee and so on, Iliyas explained the CC woulod only be acting as a channel of communication between City Hall and people of the areas involved.

He said this is by way of giving explanations to the people on the policies/system currently being implemented by City Hall and forwarding any related complaint, problem or suggestion from the people to City Hall.

"They (CC) are also required to attend every meeting held by City Hall from time to time, to give any suggestion in the effort to further fine-tune or enhance the quality of our services. They also must take part in City Hall's activities specially those related to cleanliness and beautification of the city environment," he said.

The CC appointment is only valid for two years, and would be extended if they are found to be effective and still needed, said Iliyas, adding however that the appointment can be revoked anytime if the CC concerned fails to do their job perfectly or if their services are no longer required.

City Hall Deputy Director-General, Joannes Solidau, and all its department directors and officers were also present.

One of the appointed CCs, Andrew Lim who is also Inanam Chinese Kapitan said their appointments would definitely help them more in providing much better services for the people in their jurisdiction area.

Being a CC, he said, they are now considered part of City Hall and thus would make it easier for them to bring up to City Hall and the Mayor's attention relevant issues, feedback, complaints and problems faced by people.
