Kota Kinabalu: Marine police seized contraband alcohol and a van worth more than RM62,000 at Putatan, early Thursday. Police found an illegal amateur radio used by the culprits.
The two men were arrested under the Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
City Marine Operations Force Commanding Officer, ASP Mohd Aris Jambul, said a police team seized the items during Ops Barracuda at about 4.30am.
"During the operation, police saw a suspicious van heading from Lok Kawi to Kota Kinabalu and trailed it.
"Police then stopped the van when it reached the traffic lights near a junction in Putatan," he said at the city marine police base, here.
Upon inspection, police found 7,200 bottles and cans of alcohol inside the vehicle and arrested two local men aged 23 and 30.
"Cartons containing beer, stout, and Chivas Regal liquor were seized after they failed to produce legal documents and we believe the items were sneaked in from Labuan," he said, adding the two culprits were also using illegal amateur radio.
