Kota Kinabalu: Local teams have been encouraged to sign up fast to avoid missing out on the 2009 Borneo Football 7s to be held at the Likas Stadium on Nov 21-22.
This year's Borneo 7s will be a 16-team tournament and so far 12 teams have signed up - 3 teams from Brunei, 1 from Kuala Lumpur and the rest local teams, thus leaving only 4 vacant spots.
The teams will be split into 4 groups of 4 whereby teams will play-off in a round robin. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Gold Quarter-finals while the bottom two to the Silver Quarter-finals. All teams will play a minimum of 5 games and maximum 6 games over the weekend.
Teams can register a maximum of 12 players of which 3 can be aged 35-39 while the rest must be 40 and above. Entry fee is RM500 per team.
To be played on a three-quarter sized pitch, this 7-a-side tournament features no offsides and teams are allowed unlimited flying substitutions with 15 minutes played per game.
The Gold Category winners will receive RM2,000 plus trophies while the runners-up RM1,500 plus trophies. The 3rd and 4th placed teams will receive RM1,000 and RM500 respectively plus trophies while the Silver Category finalists will receive trophies.
