Kota Kinabalu: A total of 28,862 units of low-cost/affordable homes were built in Sabah up to October.

Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister, Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar, said the State Government completed the units through the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (SHTDA) to cater to the needs of 38,965 families in the State.

He was replying to Membakut Assemblyman Datuk Mohd Arifin Bin Mohd Arif during question time at the State Legislative Assembly here, Thursday.

Ghulam said the Federal Government through the National Housing Department has built 8,731 units under the People's Housing Programme, while Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad has built 1,372 affordable homes in Sabah.

Meanwhile, the Rural Development Ministry has applied for a total of 15,000 acres in Tongod to be developed for an agropolitan project, which is one of the five projects identified under the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC).

Assistant Minister, Datuk Sairin Karno, said the actual acreage for the project would depend on whether the identified area is free from any "obstacles".

Replying to a question from Kuamut Assemblyman Masiung Banah, he said the State Economic Planning Unit has appointed as consultant the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) Sabah to carry out a study on the master plan of the Tongod Agropolitan Project in May this year.

He said the Ministry was made to understand that IDS has submitted a report on the study to the EPU last month.

Apart from the master plan study, Sairin said several other studies on the project like the environmental impact assessment (EIA), topography and soil investigations are currently being carried out.

In addition, he said the Sabah Public Works Department is in the midst of preparing a design to build Jalan Lalampas and Jalan Ansung heading to the land identified for the project.
