Kota Kinabalu: More than 150 participants are expected to take part in the Karamunsing Complex Arm Wrestling Championship 2009 which would be held from December 4-5, here, this year.
The competition, which is jointly organised by Karamunsing Complex and the Penampang Arm Wrestling Club will feature four categories - three for men and one for women.
Initially it was two categories each for men and women, but the organiser decided to scrap one women's category and introduce a novice category instead.
The decision for scrapping one of the women's categories was based on the popularity of the sport among women.
Organising spokesman Roger Frederick said instead of having two weight categories for the women, they now make it an open weight category.
"Since the sport is quite new among women, so we decided to have just one category for the women and introduce a novice category for the men, which will be for first timers," he said.
Roger added that this competition is expected to be an exciting affair as it will be competed among participants from around the State Capital.
"We have been receiving enquires as far as Labuan, Tawau and Keningau.
They have shown interest and indicated that they will come to compete," said Roger.
"And it will be interesting to see hidden talents showing off their prowess.
"But the most important factors in winning a match are good sportsmanship and a desire to win," Roger, who is a national champion, added.
He said they will be using this competition to spot for talent to represent the State at the national level tournament, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur early next year.
Roger thanked the management of Karamunsing Complex for giving them a helping hand in promoting the sport.
The three categories for the men are 76kg and above and 75kg and below as well as novice category, and open weight category for the women.
The registration fee is RM20 for men's categories and RM15 for women while the deadline for registration is on December 3.
The men's winners will receive RM800 for the champions while RM500, RM300 and RM200 for runners up, third and fourth respectively.
The novice winners will receive RM350, RM250 for runners and RM150 and RM100 respectively, and it is the same for the women.
All winners will also receive trophies.
