Kota Kinabalu: Sabah will be able to produce filmmakers who can compete both on the local and international stage if more effort is made to generate interest on the art of film-making from school level.
The confidence comes from Resource Development and Information Technology Minister, Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, who assured that his Ministry would be willing to render its support to any programme that contributes to achieving this objective.
"My Ministry will definitely give its support to programmes that come under its policies," he said when he opened the inaugural Sabah State-level Education Film Festival (FFPNS) 2009 held at Wisma Bandaraya, here, Friday.
His speech was read by Sabah IT Advancement Unit Director, Bruno Voon. Dr Yee said the festival is one of the programmes that contribute directly to ICT development in Sabah, particularly through (film) content development.
He is confident such a programme would be able to attract more students to get involved in film-making activities.
State Education Deputy Director, Dr Muhiddin Yusin, and MdeC Vice President, Kamil Ahmad Datuk Mohd Othman, were also present.
The festival, organised jointly by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MdeC), Sabah IT Advancement Unit and State Education Technology Division (BTPN) Sabah, was participated by 36 student production teams that took part in a series of workshops on the digital story telling process, a method of presenting a story using a computer. Of the number, 10 entered the finals.
Rumble Studio Production of SM Sains Lahad Datu, through a film titled "Harta Karun", emerged this year's FFPNS champion, while Media Raudha of SK Kem Tentera Sandakan, with a film titled "Jojo" and Cyberteam Production of SMK Merpati Sandakan (Sinar Kehidupan), won second and third placing, respectively.
