AADK to expand enforcement role from 2012

Published on: Sunday, November 22, 2009

Ipoh: The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) which now only carries out enforcement stipulated under the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 will expand its enforcement role beginning 2012, said AADK Prevention Director, Izhar Abu Talib.

He said deficiencies in aspects of logistics and the capabilities of staff were among reasons why AADK initially only focused on enforcement relating to drug addicts under the act till 2011.

"After 2011 AADK will enter the second phase where its officers will enforce powers under the National Anti-Drug Agency Act 2004 to take action under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

"This includes the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 as well as provisions regarding sentences under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act," he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Perak Rakan Anti-Dadah (Rada) gathering at the Home Ministry Complex, Meru Raya, here, Saturday.

He was commenting on the confusion arising about the actual powers vested in officers of the agency in discharging their responsibilities.

He said the National Anti-Drugs Agency Act 2004 clearly allows powers to arrest, detain and also carry out investigation of drugs cases involving the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983, the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988 and other acts related to drugs. - Bernama
