Sabah location for film

Published on: Wednesday, December 09, 2009

Kota Kinabalu: Sabahan award winning filmmaker Chris Chong Chan Fui, whose previous feature film Karaoke premiered at this year's Cannes International Film Festival, will shoot his next film, The Tour, here.

"I'm really excited about shooting in Sabah as the strong visual stories available here is able to bring the beautiful Sabah landscapes into the cinema," he said.

Winner of the best film American Express Maverick prize in Canada, Karaoke was initially planned to be shot here, but was moved to Selangor due to lack of support.

"We get too much Hollywood and foreign influence, and we need to have our own culture and protect it.

"I hope we will have the confidence to create our own style of cinema here and not copy anyone's," Chris stated.

"(The Tour) will be a very different film from Karaoke, as Karaoke is quite a difficult film for many because it's very experimental.

"The Tour will be more dramatic and more character-focused and audiences will be more familiar with this way of telling a story but I will give a twist away from the ordinary," he said.

Karaoke will have a special screening at GSC 1Borneo on Tuesday, Dec 15 supported by the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) and Tanjung Aru Picture, officiated by Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun.
