Kota Kinabalu: The Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC), in preparation for the upcoming 13th Sukma in Melaka in June, has successfully organised the 11th City Day Regatta in Tanjung Aru on Sunday.
KYC Commodore Louis Tsen, said KYC has been able to work closely with the Sabah Sailing Association (SSA) in promoting sailing among the younger generation.
"This Regatta has become Sabah's as well as SSA's yardstick to unearth sailing potentials for the coming Sukma," he said.
"Winners of this competition will be representing the State in Sukma, this coming June in Melaka".
Meanwhile, in this year's 11th Regatta, a total of around 75 sailors from all over Sabah, Peninsular Malaysia, Labuan, France, the Navy and Singapore competed in the event.
The teams involved sailors from Sandakan Yacht Club, Tawau Yacht Club, Federal Territory of Labuan Sports Council, NOSS of Singapore, Royal Malaysian Navy in Lumut, Perak and a sailor from France.
In the same development, six classes of boats were categorised in the competition, namely the Int. 470, Int. 420, Laser/Laser Radial, Sail Board, Optimist Division A, B and C and Optimist Novice Class.
Overall champions for the above categories were Ahmad Shafiq and Adam Chan from SSA competing in the Int. 420, Mohd Hadi Busrah and Salleh Ahmad of the Navy competing in the Int. 470, Carmen Chok Xiao Rou (Novice) from Sabah Yacht Club, and Nicole Chan Mei Yii (KYC) of the overall Optimist category.
Apart from that, Haris Fabilah and Saiful Zamri, both from the navy managed to grab first and second place in the Laser Overall respectively, whereas Eric Rodrigoes from France Navy and Samsuri Ishak from Sepanggar Navy placed first and second in the overall position respectively.
Present at the function were the guest of honour Datuk Masidi Manjun, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, the Mayor of Kota Kinabalu Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim, STB chairman Tengku Datuk Zainal Adlin, SSA president John Yap and Laksamana Pertama Dato Anuwi Hassan of the Royal Malaysian Navy.
