Kota Kinabalu: A total of 258 shuttlers would be taking part in this year's Kota Kinabalu District Youth Closed and Veteran Invitation Championship from February 26-27 at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex, here.

Kota Kinabalu Zone Badminton Association (KKZBA) in a statement yesterday said among the participants include 10 from Labuan who registered for the Men Veteran Doubles.

"Despite the busy Chinese New Year festival, players from all over the State are coming to try their luck at the Men and Women Veteran Doubles Invitation.

"The veteran categories will add spice and flavour to the Youth categories, not only to foster better friendship among the badminton fraternity but also for the juniors to emulate the skills of the veterans," said KKZBA Secretary, Anthony Linggian.

The climax of the matches will undoubtedly be in the Boys Singles Under-12 event, where top seed, Seddrick Joker is expected to defend his title against Goh Ting Yu from the Chris Poh Academy.

For the Boys Singles Under-14, top seed Fino Bieen is expected to meet either Jonathan Chin or Mohd Zuhaili in the finals.

Top seed in the Girls Under-14 on the other hand will most likely see Teh Xiao Xuan secure the title as well as in the Doubles event where she and Lydia Habirin are expected to meet Deodoryn Chong/Joeanne Chai in the finals.

For the Boys Singles Under-16 top seed Gabriel Foong should have no problem capturing the title as well as the Doubles title partnering with Roysten Habirin.

Ester Samin on the other hand will face a strong contender in the form of Cheong Sing Yueh for the Girls Singles Under-16 title, while Winson Neo, who took the title in the Young Malaysian Championship last month should have no worries in winning the Boys Singles Under-18 title.

Preliminary matches will start on Friday at 9am, while semi-final and final events will be played on Saturday.

The Association urges supporters to come and cheer for their favourite players and witness some of the brightest young stars in action.
