Kota Kinabalu: For the 15th consecutive year, the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has initiated efforts to hold the annual New Spring celebration at the Foh Sang satellite township in Luyang, here.

This Saturday (Feb 27), the street area will come alive again with an action-packed programme beginning at 6.30pm to thrill the Chinese and other communities.

Luyang Assemblywoman Melanie Chia Chui Ket said Wednesday, the event is being organised by the Foh Sang Residents Committee, headed by Wong Kong Yew. The Organising Committee, chaired by Siaw Shui Lan, has secured all the necessary permits for the celebration. SAPP President Datuk Yong Teck Lee will grace the occasion. Among the attractions will be the "God of Prosperity" with his bag of goodies.

Chia, who is also SAPP Wanita Chief, said the special gathering is one way to perpetuate the Chinese cultural heritage.

"Although we (SAPP) are no longer in government, we are people-centred and will continue serving the interests of the people. And traditions are here to stay at this time of the year. We are thankful that the Foh Sang Residents Committee is organising for us.

"Community involvement is the word. We have drawn up a programme of the people, for the people and by the people of Luyang.

We take pains to ensure there is something for everybody from kids and schoolchildren to youth and elderly folks," she told a press conference. According to Chia, the focus is on local talents and budding artistes.

Among the highlights are a cultural performance by kindergarten children, line dancing by the Luyang Ladies' Group and a presentation from KOAT (Kelab Kecergasan & Pembangunan Orang-Orang Tua Kota Kinabalu) members. Apart from better-known magician Kevin Lee who will entertain the crowd with his mask-changing antics, other entertainers will be 2007 Astro East Malaysian champion Lau Li Kim, 20, (now a gymnastic coach) and the Sunny Angels (Chin How Wei & Chang Cho Jing) who recently released their first Chinese album.
