Sandakan: Sabah are expected to use Selangor as their training base to prepare for the 13th Sukma in Melaka, said Sabah Hockey Association (SHA) deputy president Datuk Md Yusop Mansor.
According to Md Yusop, the team would undergo two months of training in Selangor, starting April, and later proceed to the Sukma.
He added that such a move was necessary to help prepare the Sabah team for the many challenges to be faced by the team during Sukma, under a formidable coach from Selangor.
Md Yusop said during the course of training, the team would also participate in a number of competitions like the Presidents Cup, Borneo Cup, Razak Cup and the Malaysian Schools Sports Council organised tournament, so that the players would gain some confidence.
"There are no competitions or avenue for exposure in Sabah because the sport is not popular here," he said.
He added that to promote the sport among the masses, the association had taken the initiative to host the National Under-16 Championships currently being held in Sandakan.- Bernama
