Selma Star wins Borneo International Yachting Challenge

Kota Kinabalu: Jun Avecilla's Selma Star C! Calibre emerged as the winner of the 7th Borneo International Yachting Challenge 2010 Labuan to Kota Kinabalu Race.

The event, which unofficially ended when the participants arrived here on Wednesday night, saw the Selma Star C! Calibre finishing at the top of the order among seven boats that competed in the Racing Class division.

Avecilla and crew completed the race in 12:39:30mins (corrected time) and finished ahead of Miri Magic 1, owned by David Richards, whose time was 13:45:36mins.

North Borneo Yachting Director of Operations, Captain Simon Farmer, finished in third place in his Ulumulu in a time of 13:51:35mins, while fourth and fifth place went to H. R Taylor and D. B. Brizuela who captained the Irresistible (14:05:41mins) and Leonard Chin in his Miri Magic 2 (14:45:58mins).

They registered a time of 14:05:41mins and 14:45:58mins respectively.

Completing the order in sixth and seventh places was Allan Riches' Outward Bound (9:04:45mins) and J-F Cormmerais' Sarawak Sea Horse (9:15:32mins).

The results were revealed at a press conference here yesterday.

Among those present was North Borneo Yachting Director of Operations, Captain Simon Farmer, Sail Malaysia Organising Chairman, Sazli Kamal and, Zachary Mobijon from Sri Pelancongan Sabah Sdn Bhd.

In the Cruising Class A, Jim Ellis and his crew in their Remington was the fastest of 13 boats that navigated the route.

They registered a corrected time of 11:59:17mins to finish ahead of J and J Marwood's Touche, which completed the race in 14:47:35mins, while Fast Forward, owned by Ken Pollard, finished in third place in 14:50:20mins.

The Cruising B Class, saw Kingsley Barker claiming the honours in his boat, Court Jester, which completed the race in 11:51:32mins, while Elouise, which is owned by Labbadi Gilles, finished second in 13:34:05mins.

John Beale's Cloudy Bay finished in third place in 14:21:16mins, while 14 other boast that started this race made up the remaining order.

The event also had a Cruising Multihull category, which was won by Bill Webb in his boat called Out of The Bag, which registered a time of 9:48:10mins.

Stuart Simpson's Truest Passion and Rees Duncan's Windy Spirit finished in second and third place in their times of 11:35:14mins and 11:35:31mins respectively.

The 151 odd crewmembers (from 14 countries) and their 44 yachts will compete in a final race today, which starts at two different times, 11am and 2pm.

This final race, which is dubbed the Kota Kinabalu Harbour Race, is a side-activity, which will take the yachters from Sutera Harbour to the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and back.

Meanwhile, the initiatives and support from the state governments of Sabah and Sarawak in continuing to organise this event would place Malaysian Borneo on the world map as a prestigious venue for boating events and a preferred holiday destination.

The Participating yachts are from Australia, British Virgin Island, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, New Zealand, Philippine, Singapore, Sweden, United Kingdom, USA and Vanuatu.

There will be an official closing ceremony dinner and prize presentation ceremony tonight, which Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun is expected to officiate.
